Marasmus

What is marasmus?
Marasmus is a disease or disorder due to deficiency of energy nutrients in foods, causing the body protein reserves used up, so the child was emaciated.

What are the causes of marasmus?
Energy shortages may occur due to the intake of food or inadequate food intake, poor nutrition knowledge, bad habits, and believe in superstition.

What are the symptoms and signs of marasmus?
Symptoms were always there / there is definitely growth inhibition or loss of fat so emaciated. Symptoms that may accompany the diarrhea, sometimes accompanied by skin changes, hair changes sometimes there, sometimes there is enlargement of the liver, apathy, weight loss, turgor down (skin elasticity), sunken eyes.

What complications can occur because of marasmus?

Management of patients with marasmus
Foods high in calories and high in protein, with a dose that has been recommended and awarded in stages.
Comorbidities, should be treated with antibiotics such kind of infection.


Nursing Care Plan for Marasmus

1. Data collection

Based on the data collection tool that has been developed diagnosis treatment / problems that may occur include;
  • Imbalanced Nutrition: less than body requirements
  • Fluid volume deficit
  • Altered Bowel Elimination: Diarrhea

2. Goal
  • Having given nursing actions, slowly body weight (BW) up, and the body begins to fill.
  • Having given nursing actions reduced diarrhea and normal fluid balance.
3. Interventions
  • Artificial feeding with skim milk, which is coupled with cooking oils and foods that contain fat.
  • Provision of appropriate drug treatment program.
  • Still given breast milk on a regular basis in accordance with the rules constantly.
4. Evaluation
  • Weight increases with body weight should be.
  • Body does not show signs and symptoms of marasmus.
  • Unmet need for fluid, diarrhea disappeared.
